An automatic transmission is a type of transmission found in vehicles that automatically shifts from one gear to the next without requiring the driver to use a clutch or manually shift gears. This type of transmission typically operates using a series of hydraulic and electronic components, such as a torque converter, clutch packs, valve body and planetary gearset, to make the changes in gears as the vehicle accelerates and decelerates. The transmission is controlled by a number of sensors that detect the revolutions per minute of the engine and make adjustments to the shifting based on the driver's speed and acceleration needs.

1. Slipping: You may notice the engine revving, but the car does not move.

2. Grinding or Shaking: Strange noises like grinding or shaking coming from the transmission. 

3. Burning Smell: If you smell burning coming from the car, your transmission may be overheating. 

4. Leaking Fluid: Leaks from the transmission can indicate a major issue. 

5. Delay in Movement: If the car is slow to move when shifting from one gear to another, it's time for a repair or replacement. 

6. Check Engine Light: An illuminated check engine light can be a symptom of transmission trouble. 

7. Jumping Gears: If it jumps from one gear to another or won't shift out of neutral, it needs attention.
